Choosing the best Mac for a student can be difficult: should you buy a MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, MacBook, Mac mini or new iMac? Here we explore the various Mac options and give our buying advice. Best Macbook for pre-med student I'm an incoming college freshman and I'm going to buy my first Macbook. My concerns are: I'll probably use Microsoft Office for compatibility purposes with my classmates and professors ( so I'll likely juggle between Windows and OS then) 5-8 open internet tabs for researching. During the 3rd year of medical school, many of our students prefer a small tablet to carrying around their laptop. Apple iOS devices are the most popular with our medical students. Many students have had success with Android phones and some have been successful with Android tablets.

I'm ready to upgrade my 2010 Macbook Pro that has never failed me so far. The only issue is the weight. I bike/walk to campus all the time and the nearly 6 extra pounds (computer/case/charger) is noticeable.
I want something thin and light. The problem is all the new MacBooks (MB, Air, Pros) are all thiner and lighter than what I have now.
The new macbook is gorgeous. A retina screen is actually important to me, so I feel like the Air is out. However, everyone knocks the M processor in the new macbook as not powerful enough, but I am not sure of that, as most who knock it haven't used it.
The processing power seems low, but perhaps they have made other optimizations that make it functional for multitasking?
As you all know, med school laptops are basically for: Web browsing with lots of tabs, searching and editing giant PDFs, music playing, video lectures streaming, word processing.

Can the new Macbook feasibly do all that as well if not better than my 5 year old MBP?
