Remote desktop software, more accurately called remote access software or remote control software, let you remotely control one computer from another. By remote control we truly mean remote control — you can take over the mouse and keyboard and use the computer you've connected to just like your own.

Remote desktop software is really useful for lots of situations, from helping your dad who lives 500 miles away, work through a computer issue, to remotely administering from your New York office the dozens of servers you run in a Singaporean data center!

Generally, remotely accessing a computer requires that a piece of software be installed on the computer you want to connect to, called the host. Once that's done, another computer or device with the right credentials, called the client, can connect to the host and control it.

Don't let the technical aspects of remote desktop software scare you away. The better free remote access programs listed below require nothing more than a few clicks to get started — no special computer knowledge required.

Remote Desktop is also the actual name of the built-in remote access tool in Windows operating systems. It's ranked alongside the other tools but we think there are several remote control programs that do a better job.

Remote Utilities

What We Like

• Includes lots of remote access tools

What We Don't Like

• It can get confusing setting up the program for first use

• Runs on Windows only

Remote Utilities is a free remote access program with some really great features. It works by pairing two remote computers together with what they call an 'Internet ID.' You can control a total of 10 PCs with Remote Utilities.

Install a portion of Remote Utilities called Host on a Windows PC to have permanent access to it. You also have the option to just run Agent, which provides spontaneous support without installing anything — it can even be launched from a flash drive.

The host computer is given an Internet ID that they must share so a client can make a connection.

The Viewer program is used to connect to the host or agent software.

The Viewer can be downloaded on its own or in the Viewer + Host combo file. You can also download a portable version of the Viewer if you'd rather not install anything.

Connecting the Viewer to the Host or Agent is done without any router changes like port forwarding, making setup very easy. The client just needs to enter the Internet ID number and password.

There are also client applications that can be downloaded for free for iOS and Android users.

Different modules can be used from the viewer so you can actually access a computer remotely without even viewing the screen, though screen-viewing is definitely Remote Utilities' main feature.

Here are some of the modules Remote Utilities allows: A remote task manager, file transfer, power control for remote rebooting or WOL, remote terminal (access to Command Prompt), remote file launcher, system information manager, text chat, remote registry access, and remote webcam viewing.

In addition to these features, Remote Utilities also supports remote printing and viewing multiple monitors.

Unfortunately, configuring Remote Utilities can be confusing on the host computer since there are lots of different options.

Remote Utilities can be installed on Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP, as well as Windows Server 2012, 2008, and 2003.

UltraVNC

What We Like

• Supports file transfers

• Custom keyboard shortcuts can be set up

• You can send chat messages to the remote computer

• Lets you connect to a remote computer from a browser, computer program, and mobile app

What We Don't Like

• You have to change your router settings to make the program work

• Doesn't work well for on-demand, spontaneous remote access

• Can't print remotely

• Unable to turn the computer on remotely

• Confusing download page

Another remote access program is UltraVNC. UltraVNC works a bit like Remote Utilities, where a server and viewer is installed on two PCs, and the viewer is used to control the server.

When you install UltraVNC, you're asked if you wish to install the Server, Viewer, or both. Install the Server on the PC you wish to connect to.

You can install the UltraVNC Server as a system service so it's always running. This is the ideal option so you can always make a connection to it with the client software.

To make a connection with the UltraVNC Server, you must install the Viewer portion during setup.

After configuring port forwarding in your router, you'll be able to access the UltraVNC server from anywhere with an internet connection — either via a mobile device that supports VNC connections, a PC with the Viewer installed, or an internet browser. All you need is the Server's IP address to make the connection.

UltraVNC supports file transfers, text chat, clipboard sharing, and can even boot and connect to the server in Safe Mode.

The download page is a little confusing — first select the most recent UltraVNC version, and then choose the 32-bit or 64-bit setup file that will work with your edition of Windows.

Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, XP, and Windows Server 2012, 2008, and 2003 users can install and use UltraVNC.

Chrome Remote Desktop

What We Like

• Lets you remote into the computer even when the user isn't logged in

• Installs quickly

• Has multi-monitor support

• Includes a file transfer tool

• Lets you remote into the computer via an app

• Works on Windows, macOS, and Linux

What We Don't Like

• Chrome is the recommended browser to use (which the host might not have installed)

• Can't chat with the remote user

• Remote printing isn't allowed

Chrome Remote Desktop is an extension for the Google Chrome web browser that lets you set up a computer for remote access from any other computer running Google Chrome.

The way this works is that you install the extension in Google Chrome and then give authorization for remote access to that PC via a personal PIN you create yourself.

​This requires you to log on to your Google account, like your Gmail or YouTube login information.

Best Free Remote Desktop Software For Mac

To connect to the host browser, sign on to Chrome Remote Desktop through another web browser (it has to be Chrome) using the same Google credentials or using a temporary access code generated by the host computer.

Because you're logged in, you can easily see the other PC name, from where you can simply choose it and begin the remote session.

There isn't a chat function supported in Chrome Remote Desktop like you see with similar programs, but it's very easy to configure and lets you connect to your computer (or anyone's) from anywhere using just your web browser.

What's more is that you can remote into the computer when the user doesn't have Chrome open, or even when they're completely logged out of their user account.

Since Chrome Remote Desktop runs entirely within the Google Chrome browser, it can work with any operating system that uses Chrome, including Windows, Mac, Linux, and Chromebooks.

Windows Remote Desktop

What We Like

• Provides the most natural and easy-to-use remote access experience

• No download necessary

• Supports file transfers

What We Don't Like

• Works on Windows only

• Not every version of Windows can be remoted into

• No built-in chat capability

Windows Remote Desktop is the remote access software built into the Windows operating system. No additional download is necessary to use the program.

To enable connections to a computer with Windows Remote Desktop, you must open the System Properties settings (accessible via Control Panel) and allow remote connections via a particular Windows user through the Remote tab.

You do have to set up your router for port forwarding so another PC can connection to it from outside the network, but this is usually not that big of a hassle to complete.

The other computer that wishes to connect to the host machine must simply open the already installed Remote Desktop Connection software and enter the IP address of the host.

You can open Remote Desktop through the Run dialog box (open it with the Windows Key + R shortcut); just enter the mstsccommand to launch it.

Most of the other software in this list have features that Windows Remote Desktop doesn't, but this method of remote access seems to be the most natural and easiest way to control the mouse and keyboard of a remote Windows PC.

Once you have everything configured, you can transfer files, print to a local printer, listen to audio from the remote PC, and transfer clipboard content.

Windows Remote Desktop can be used on Windows from XP up through Windows 10.

However, while all versions of Windows can connect to other computers that have incoming connections enabled, not all Windows versions can act as a host (i.e. accept incoming remote access requests).

If you're using a Home Premium version or below, your computer can only act as a client and therefore cannot be accessed remotely (but it can still access other computers remotely).

Incoming remote access is only allowed on Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate versions of Windows. In those editions, others can remote into the computer as described above.

Something else to remember is that Remote Desktop will kick a user off if they're logged in when someone connects to that user's account remotely. This is vastly different from every other program in this list — all the others can remote in to a user account while the user is still actively using the computer.

AnyDesk

What We Like

What We Don't Like

• Could be confusing to understand at first

• Might limit connection time or address book entries because there are also paid versions of the program

AnyDesk is a remote desktop program that you can run portably or install like a regular program.

Launch AnyDesk on the PC you want to connect to and record the 9-digit number, or custom alias if one is set up.

When the client connects, the host will be asked to allow or disallow the connection and can also control permissions, like to allow sound, clipboard use, and the ability to block the host's keyboard/mouse control.

On another computer, run AnyDesk and then enter the host's Remote Desk ID or alias in the Remote Desk section of the program. Press Connect, and wait for the host to press Accept.

If unattended access is set up, the client doesn't need to wait for the host to accept the connection.

Most Popular Mac Software

AnyDesk auto-updates and can enter full-screen mode, balance between quality and speed of the connection, transfer files and sound, sync the clipboard, record the remote session, run keyboard shortcuts, take screenshots of the remote computer, and restart the host computer.

AnyDesk works with Windows (10 through XP), macOS, and Linux.

AeroAdmin

What We Like

• Can be installed as a portable application

• Free for commercial and private use

• Works right away; no router changes are necessary

• Can remotely log off and reboot the computer

• Encrypted connections

• Ideal for spontaneous and unattended access

What We Don't Like

• Doesn't support chat

• Connection times are limited in the free edition

• Can't print remotely

• No file transfer support in free version

AeroAdmin is probably the easiest program to use for free remote access. There are hardly any settings, and everything is quick and to the point, which is perfect for spontaneous support.

Just open the portable program and share your IP address or the given ID with someone else. This is how the client computer will know how to connect to the host.

The client PC just needs to run the same AeroAdmin program and enter the ID or IP address into their program. You can choose View only or Remote Control before you connect, and then just select Connect to request remote control.

When the host computer confirms the connection, you can start controlling the computer and share clipboard text.

It's great that AeroAdmin is absolutely free for both personal and commercial use, but it's too bad there isn't a chat option included, and really too bad that you can't transfer files.

Another note that needs to be made is that while AeroAdmin is 100% free, it does limit how many hours you can use it per month.

AeroAdmin can be installed on 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows 10, 8, 7, and XP.

RemotePC

What We Like

• Very simple design that's easy to understand

• File transfers are supported

• Users can chat with each other during the session

• Works on Windows and macOS

• Sessions can be recorded to a video file

• Apps let you remote into a computer from a mobile device

What We Don't Like

• Lets you keep remote access information for just one computer at a time

RemotePC, for good or bad, is a simpler free remote desktop program. You're only allowed one connection (unless you upgrade) but for many of you, that'll be just fine.

Download and install RemotePC on the PC that will be accessed remotely. Windows and Mac are both supported.

Share the Access ID and Key with someone else so that they can access the computer.

Alternatively, you can create an account with RemotePC and then log in on the host computer to add the computer to your account for easy access later.

There are two ways to access the RemotePC host from a different computer. The first is through the RemotePC program that you install on your computer. Enter the host computer's Access ID and Key to connect to and control the host, or even just to transfer files.

Another way you can use RemotePC from the client's perspective is through the iOS or Android app. Follow the download link below to get RemotePC installed on your mobile device.

You'll be able to receive sound from the remote PC, record what you're doing to a video file, access multiple monitors, transfer files, make sticky notes, send keyboard shortcuts, and text chat. However, some of those features aren't available if the host and client computers are running different operating systems.

RemotePC lets you have just one computer set up on your account at once, which means you can't keep hold of a list of PCs to remote into like you can with most of the other remote access programs in this list.

However, with the one-time access feature, you can remote into as many computers as you like, you just can't save the connection information to your computer.

The following operating systems are supported: Windows 10, 8, 7, Windows Server 2016, 2012, 2008, and Mac (10.9.5 Mavericks and newer).

Remember that the free version of RemotePC lets you keep track of only one computer in your account. You must pay if you want to hold on to the Access ID of more than one host.

Seecreen

What We Like

• Very small program file that's entirely portable

• One of the best ways to get instant, on-demand remote access

• Lets you share the whole desktop or a single program window

• Supports voice and text chat

• Supports file transfers

• Works on Windows, Linux, and macOS

What We Don't Like

• Doesn't support clipboard syncing

• When recording a remote session, the created video file isn't in a popular, usable format

Seecreen (previously called Firnass) is an extremely tiny (500 KB), yet powerful free remote access program that's absolutely perfect for on-demand, instant support.

Open the program on the computer that needs to be controlled. After creating an account and logging in, you can add other users to the menu by their email address or username.

Adding the client under the 'Unattended' section lets them have unattended access to the computer.

If you don't want to add the contact, you can still just share the ID and password with the client so they can have instant access.

To connect to the host computer with Seecreen, the other user needs to enter the host's ID and password.

Once the two computers are paired up, you can start a voice call or share your screen, an individual window, or part of the screen with the other user. Once screen sharing has begun, you can record the session, transfer files, and run remote commands.

Sharing the screen must be initiated from the client's computer.

Seecreen is a JAR file that uses Java to run. All versions of Windows are supported, as well as Mac and Linux operating systems.

LiteManager

What We Like

• Stores remote access information for up to 30 computers

• Several ways to connect to a remote computer

• You can open files remote without controlling the screen

• Lets you transfer files without any notifications or alerts

• Supports text chat

• Includes lots of useful tools

• Supports spontaneous and portable remote access

• Runs on Windows and macOS

What We Don't Like

Mac Rdp Host

• The program doesn't update very often

• The multitude of options could be overwhelming and confusing if you just want a simple remote access tool

LiteManager is another remote access program, and it's strikingly similar to Remote Utilities, which we explain above.

However, unlike Remote Utilities, which can control a total of only 10 PCs, LiteManager supports up to 30 slots for storing and connecting to remote computers, and also has lots of useful features.

The computer that needs to be accessed should install the LiteManager Pro – Server.msi program (it's free), which is contained in the downloaded ZIP file.

There are numerous ways to ensure a connection can be made to the host computer. It can be done through the IP address, computer name, or an ID.

The easiest way to set this up is to right-click the server program in the notification area of the taskbar, choose Connect by ID, erase the contents that are already there, and click Connected to generate a brand new ID.

The other program, called Viewer, is installed for the client to connect to the host. Once the host computer has produced an ID, the client should enter it from the Connect by ID option in the Connection menu to establish a remote connection to the other computer.

Once connected, the client can do all sorts of things, much like with Remote Utilities, such as work with multiple monitors, transfer files silently, take full control or read-only access of the other PC, run a remote task manager, launch files and programs remotely, capture sound, edit the registry, create a demonstration, lock the other person's screen and keyboard, and text chat.

There's also a QuickSupport option, which is a portable server and viewer program that makes connecting much quicker than the above method.

I tested LiteManager in Windows 10, but it should also work just fine in Windows 8, 7, Vista, and XP. This program is available for macOS, too.

Zoho Assist

What We Like

• Free for commercial and personal use

• Works on Windows, Mac, and Linux

• Easy setup

• The client needs no software

What We Don't Like

• Limited compared to the paid versions

Zoho Assist is yet another remote access tool that has a free edition for both personal and commercial use. You can share screens and files, and chat remotely with the other user through a unique session ID and password.

The host needs to select Share My Screen on the Zoho Assist website, and then START NOW to get a session ID and password to give to the client. You can copy the ID and password manually, share a unique URL with the client, or just enter their email address to have the connection info emailed to them.

The host also needs to download a small tool so that the client can remotely access in order to control the computer. Use the Download button to save ZA_Connect.exe to your computer, and then open it to install it.

Once the host computer is fully set up and ready to go, the client needs to access the Join Screen Sharing Session page and enter the ID and password of the client computer.

Or, if the host shared the information over email or the URL, then, of course, the client can just use that information to connect to the host.

By default, the client does not have full control rights, but only viewing permissions. To change this, the client needs to go to Session > Request control, and wait for the host to click Yes.

Some other features included in this program are unattended access, clipboard sharing, a Swap Screen button, and an annotation tool so that the host and client can draw on the screen.

The Zoho Assist free plan supports only five unattended computers and one concurrent session. For more features, you can order the Standard, Professional, or Enterprise edition.

Best Remote Desktop App For Mac And Ipad

Comodo Unite

What We Like

• Works through a VPN

• You don't have to make any changes to your router

• Supports chat

• Has a unique interface that's still easy to use

What We Don't Like

• The software hasn't been updated since 2011

Comodo Unite is another free remote access program that creates a secure VPN connection between multiple computers. Once a VPN is established, you can remotely have access to applications and files through the client software.

Install the Comodo Unite program on the computer you wish to control and then make an account with Comodo Unite. The account is how you keep track of the PCs you add to your account so it's easy to make connections.

To connect to a Comodo Unite host computer, just install the same software and then sign on with the same username and password. You can then just select the computer you want to control and begin the session immediately through the VPN.

Files can only be shared if you start a chat, so it's not as easy to share files with Comodo Unite as it is with the other remote desktop programs in this list. However, the chat is secure within the VPN, which you may not find in similar software.

Only Windows 7, Vista, and XP (32-bit and 64-bit versions) are officially supported, but I was able to get Comodo Unite to function as advertised in Windows 10 and Windows 8 as well.

Comodo Unite has been replaced with Comodo ONE, but it's still available for download and is more appropriate for most people.

ShowMyPC

What We Like

• Simple, to-the-point design

• Lets others connect to your computer through a special URL

• The program is portable and perfect for spontaneous remote access

What We Don't Like

• Keyboard shortcuts are limited

• Shows premium options that you can't use in the free edition

ShowMyPC is a portable and free remote access program that's nearly identical to UltraVNC (No. 2 in this list) but uses a password to make a connection instead of an IP address.

Run the ShowMyPC software on any computer and then choose Show My PC to get a unique ID number called a Share Password.

This ID is the number you must share with others so they can connect to the host.

Open the same ShowMyPC program on another computer and enter the ID from the host program to make a connection. The client can instead enter the number on the ShowMyPC website (in the 'View PC' box) and run a Java version of the program within their browser.

There are additional options here that aren't available in UltraVNC, like webcam sharing over a web browser and scheduled meetings that allow someone to connect to your PC via a personal web link that launches a Java version of ShowMyPC.

ShowMyPC clients can only send a limited number of keyboard shortcuts to the host computer.

Choose ShowMyPC Free on the download page to get the free version. It works on all versions of Windows.

DesktopNow

What We Like

• You can access remote computers from any web browser

• Lets you avoid setting up router port forwards, but that is an option

• Includes a remote file browser for file transfers

What We Don't Like

• Hasn't been updated in a long time

• Unattended access is hard to achieve

DesktopNow is a free remote access program from NCH Software. After optionally forwarding the proper port number in your router, and signing up for a free account, you can access your PC from anywhere through a web browser.

The computer that will be accessed remotely needs to have the DesktopNow software installed.

When the program is first launched, your email and a password should be entered so you can use the same credentials on the client side to make the connection.

The host computer can either configure its router to forward the proper port number to itself or choose cloud access during the install to make a direct connection to the client, bypassing the need for complicated forwarding.

It's probably a better idea for most people to use the direct, cloud access method to avoid issues with port forwarding.

The client just needs to access the host through a web browser. If the router was configured to forward the port number, the client would use the host PCs IP address to connect. If cloud access was chosen, a specific link would have been given to the host that you'd use for the connection.

DesktopNow has a nice file sharing feature that lets you download your shared files remotely in an easy to use file browser.

There isn't a dedicated application to connect to DesktopNow from a mobile device, so trying to view and control a computer from a phone or tablet can be difficult. However, the website is optimized for mobile phones, so viewing your shared files is easy.

Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP are supported, both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

BeamYourScreen

What We Like

• Multiple people can view the same screen simultaneously

• Viewers can remote in to the computer from a web browser

• Works through a special ID (no router changes have to be made)

• Files can be shared between computers

• Supports text chat

• Can be used portably or as a regular program

What We Don't Like

• It can be confusing knowing which of the several download options to choose

• Outdated software

Another free and portable remote access program is BeamYourScreen. This program works like some of the others in this list, where the presenter is given an ID number they must share with another user so they can connect to the presenter's screen.

BeamYourScreen hosts are called organizers, so the program called BeamYourScreen for Organizers (Portable) is the preferred method the host computer should use for accepting remote connections. It's quick and easy to start sharing your screen without having to install anything.

There's also a version that can be installed called BeamYourScreen for Organizers (Installation).

Just click the Start Session button to open up your computer for connections. You'll be given a session number you must share with someone before they can connect to the host.

Clients can also install the portable or installable version of BeamYourScreen, but there's a dedicated program called BeamYourScreen for Participants that's a small executable file that can be launched similar to the portable one for organizers.

Enter the host's session number in the Session ID section of the program to join the session.

Once connected, you can control the screen, share clipboard text and files, and chat with text.

Something rather unique about BeamYourScreen is that you can share your ID with multiple people so many participants can join in and look at the presenter's screen. There's even the BeamYourScreen online viewer so clients can view the other screen without having to run any software.

BeamYourScreen works with all versions of Windows, plus Windows Server 2008 and 2003, Mac, and Linux.

Aren't There Other Free Remote Access Programs?

You do have other options like TeamViewer, which is wildly popular. Unfortunately, however, many users have had issues with it thinking that they're using it in a business setting, forcing them to pay to continue using the tool.

LogMeIn's free product, LogMeIn Free, is no longer available. This was one of the more popular free remote access services ever available so it's really too bad it went away.

Managing your own computer from afar or troubleshooting a family member's PC without being in front of it is much easier when you have a good remote desktop utility to rely on. This week we're going to look at five of the best remote desktop and management tools, based on your nominations.

Teamviewer

Teamviewer supports Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS, and is free for personal use. It's probably the most obvious alternative to LogMeIn, and the most popular contender from the nominations thread. Not only does Teamviewer offer remote support and remote management—as in you don't necessarily have to have the remote side set up before you need to connect—it also sports useful features like wake-on-LAN to wake up a sleeping computer and put it back to sleep when you're finished, file transfer capabilities, clipboard passthrough, support for connecting from mobile devices like phones or tablets, and more. The beauty of Teamviewer is that all of the features I mentioned are free, setup is incredibly easy, and the app actually has more features built-in to it than you'll probably ever really need. Those of you who nominated it praised its ability to manage multiple systems from one computer without having to remember them, the fact that Teamviewer works well without you having to make a ton of firewall modifications or do port forwarding, their support for two-step authentication, and more. Splashtop

Splashtop supports Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, and iOS, and is free for personal use (up to five computers, and depending on how you use it). It's perhaps most notable as a tool that allows you to stream audio and video across computers with minimal latency, so if you love watching movies on your tablet that are stored on your desktop but don't want to deal with apps or compatibility issues, Splashtop is a great tool. It's not limited to that these days though—You can use the applications on your remote device like you were sitting right there, manage files without transferring them first in their own native applications, and more.

Best Remote Desktop Software

The only downside to Splashtop free is that it starts to get pricey when you really need remote access. $2/month will get you the ability to access your home computers off network, which is arguably the biggest draw of a remote access tool—so you can actually access your PC when you're away, or a friend or family member's PC without going to their house. It does require a little setup on the client side before you can connect too, but if your goal is to enjoy media remotely and do some light troubleshooting, it's worth a look. Chrome Remote Desktop

Chrome Remote Desktop supports Windows and OS X (and Linux, sort of), and is completely free for personal and commercial use. It's essentially just a Chrome app that you have to install in Chrome on any computer you want to connect to. You'll have to be logged in to Chrome on any computer you want to connect to as well, which is a bit of a bummer, but the great thing is that it runs in your browser, is super-easy to set up, and it's remarkably fast. It's not packed with additional features, but if all you need is to do some quick, cross-platform troubleshooting or access some files remotely, it's fast and free, and uses a web browser you probably already have installed. It's not perfect—Chrome Remote Desktop has no mobile apps or support at all (although the word is it's coming soon), has some trouble with multiple displays, and it's pretty featureless when it comes to things like wake-on-LAN, file transfer, streaming, and other support tools, but what you trade in heft you get back in simplicity and ease-of-use, which is exactly what those of you who nominated it praised it for. Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDC)/Apple Remote Desktop

Microsoft's RDC protocol and Apple's own Remote Desktop platform both use existing technologies within each respective operating system to give remote administrators the ability to connect from anywhere they need to, access their files, troubleshoot problems, or work with files and applications as though they were using the remote device. If you live in a Windows world, for example, enabling RDC on your home server and connecting directly to it over your LAN is much easier than downloading and setting up a third party tool. If you're connecting remotely across the internet, you can still do it, but you'll need to forward ports and lock things down for security's sake. Plus, there are mobile clients available. Apple's Remote Desktop on the other hand is a bit more complicated—instead of just remote access, you get complete remote management, including the ability to update software, install software, manage users, and fully support a remote computer. ARD is $80. RDC is free (it's not a fair comparison, feature-wise, and we're not trying to compare the two to each other.)

The biggest benefits to both though is that once you're set up, and with minimal effort on the client side, you don't need to do anything else, and you have tons of options and features that let you manage, access, and troubleshoot the remote PC. Since both platforms use protocols built in to their respective operating systems, cross-platform support is a matter of finding a tool that works on each OS that connects to the other, and that offers the features you want. VNC, or Virtual Network Computing, is less of a specific product and more of a platform. It uses existing protocols to send keyboard and mouse actions to a remote computer, and in turn it sends the screen from that remote system back to your viewer. Depending on the VNC client and server software you use, you get more features, like clipboard syncing, file sync and transfer, and more. That's the catch though—there's a VNC client and server that supports every operating system, mobile and desktop, and as long as you know what you're doing and set it up properly, you'll be able to connect to any system you control, anywhere you have internet access, completely for free. The 'Official' VNC software is RealVNC, which offers its client and server apps for Windows, OS X, Linux, Android, iOS, and even Chrome for free (but will happily add features and support if you're willing to pay for them).

The other nice thing about VNC is that because it's a simple protocol, you don't necessarily have to match client and server—you can use one server on your PC at home and a free client on your phone to connect to it. VNC isn't difficult to set up, but it can be tricky to set up correctly—as in, in a way where there's minimal latency when you're trying to work with your computer remotely (easier said than done, especially over the Internet), VNC can communicate securely through your firewall at home, and without worrying that your home IP address will suddenly change and prevent you from connecting. Again, not hard, but a knowledgeable hand should do it. RealVNC may be the official VNC software provider, but TightVNC has always been one of my favorites, and it's free. UltraVNC is another option. VNC definitely has the benefit that your data isn't passing through a third party, there are no proprietary tools or services to subscribe to, and you're in complete control. Although every Mac comes with DVD player software, it’s very plain jane, offering only the very basics. If you need more powerful navigation and organization tools, JRiver Media Center is the application you want. During our testing we measured how much CPU usage each program ate up, some took as much as 47% - Zoom Player only takes up 6%. So, you can be certain that you’ll be able to surf the web and run other programs while you watch a movie.
But there are a couple of drawbacks, the biggest of which is that it has a steep learning curve. One that is slightly shocking in a program that should be very simple. It took the program approximately 15 seconds from the play button being pushed to the movie starting on the screen. However, unlike Blu-ray player software we reviewed, there wasn’t much difference between the fastest and the slowest. The program that took the longest to load a movie was only took about 22 seconds – and all the others never cracked 20.
This program also takes up a whopping 47% of your system resources. So, if you plan on doing other things on your computer while you watch your movies, plan on potential slowdowns and drags in performance for both the DVD player and the other applications.

Performance Test
In this test, we evaluated each program based on its capacity to play video without lagging, buffering, or other distortions or delays. We also considered the number of audio and picture optimization settings each application has, as well as how well they work.

For reference, a difference of a few percentage points in the programs’ scores shouldn’t have a big impact on which software you choose. We just felt that applications with higher scores worked slightly better than ones graded a little bit lower.

Usability Test
We designed this test to determine how easy each software is to use, including how intuitive it is, how many important features and settings it has, and how well it performs each task. Great DVD player programs have interfaces that are easy to understand and navigate right off the bat.

Additionally, we tested each application’s customization options and other features, such as modifiable video effects. As we customized playback and used extra features, we judged them based on how easy they are to find and use, as well as how well they work.

CPU Usage Test
We played a test DVD and monitored how much the software strained our computer's CPU. We played the movie without any extra features activated or other programs running. The percentage score we list is the amount of processing power the software used while playing the movie in full screen.

Software that uses a higher percent of your computer’s CPU power may make other programs run slowly if you use them at the same time, or you may hear the computer fan running to keep the processor from overheating. Applications that use fewer system resources are better because you can run other programs while you watch movies, and you don’t have to listen to the high-pitched buzzing of a processor fan.

You can expect to pay anywhere from $10 to $100 for DVD player software – which sounds like a lot, because it is. Especially since Windows Media Player comes free with the operating system and plays DVDs rather well. The value comes in what else you can do with it – nevertheless, it’s hard to justify paying $100 for the ability to watch DVDs on your computer.

Help & Support: Get Information & Upgrade Your Software
With great software comes great technical support, or at least it should. Consider products that offer a way to contact the manufacturer, as well as online documentation that can answer your questions or ease your concerns such as tutorials, a knowledgebase or a FAQs section.

One of our favorite support features is a user forum, which some manufacturers include on their websites. Forums let you interact directly and indirectly with other people using the product to ask questions, report issues or just talk over your common bond.

Lastly, whether for Mac OS X or PC, your DVD player software should offer some kind of free upgrade option. Most come with free minor upgrades for life and make you pay for major upgrades, though your software will continue to work fine if you choose not to upgrade. While most people use DVD player software to play DVDs, many also enjoy playing their favorite digital video files. Some player software allows you to play DVD-R/RW discs. Only a few play Blu-ray discs, so if your movie collection is predominantly Blu-ray, you may want to consider Blu-ray player software, which typically has more all-encompassing options.

What's the Best DVD Player to Buy?

In the age of ultra-high-definition Blu-ray discs, streaming services and digital downloads, you could be forgiven for thinking DVD is dead. However, this is far from true. Unlike other formats like VHS and Laserdisc, DVD has been able to hold on to some relevance. There are still millions upon millions of DVDs in people’s media collections. Unfortunately, the DVD player you bought in 2000 probably doesn’t work anymore, even if the discs you bought back then do. Do Windows & Mac Have DVD Player Software?

Every Windows and Mac computer comes with a preloaded media player. For Windows, it’s Media Player. This is a handy tool that’s been packaged with Windows for many years, but it doesn’t play DVDs – you need third-party software to play them.

There’s really no worthy competition for the free, open source media player VLC. It’s been around for ages and is a go-to program for people who want a free alternative to iTunes and Media Player. VLC looks and runs a lot like iTunes, and it’s easy to navigate and has decent organizational tools. In addition, it works on almost all operating systems, including Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS and more.

At one time the idea of watching movies on a Mac seemed both quaint and inconvenient. After all, you already had a TV and its accouterments in the rumpus room. Why gather friends and family around the desk in the corner of the living room to watch movies on a 17-inch iMac?

But times are changing. A home media center that includes a Mac mini is no longer a crazy idea. Nor would anyone look askance if you moved your 27-inch iMac into that same rumpus room and devoted some of its time to entertainment.

Once you accept the notion of a Mac as a home media player, your next thoughts naturally turn to movies and, likely, the iTunes Store. But the Store isn’t the end-all-and-be all of online movie sources. Although outfits such as CinemaNow and Blockbuster demand that their content be watched on devices that don’t bear the Apple brand, there are a handful of other sources for movies that you can play on your Mac. Step up to the ticket booth and check out these options.

1. The iTunes Store

We can hardly begin without mentioning what the iTunes Store provides. Of any source, the iTunes Store is the most Mac friendly. Offering thousands of movies for purchase or rental, the Store’s movies are playable on a Mac, Windows PC, Apple TV, iPod, and iPhone. You can transfer them to and play them on any computer authorized with the Apple ID used to purchase or rent the movie. The Store sells and rents both standard definition and HD movies. There are currently more than 280 HD movies, available in the 720p (1280 by 720) format. Many feature 5.1 surround-sound soundtracks as well.

Apple's prices are based on a movie's age and format. Apple characterizes movies as being library (meaning older) or new. Prices generally shake out as follow: standard-definition library titles cost $10 to purchase; new standard-definition titles are $15; all HD titles cost $20; iTunes Extras movies, which contain bonus DVD-like material, cost $15 in SD format or $20 in HD (there are some exceptions to iTunes Extras pricing, however).

As for rentals, standard-definition library titles cost $3, and new library titles in standard definition cost $4. Library HD rentals cost $4, and new HD rentals cost $5 (iTunes Extras content is not available for rentals). After you download a rental movie, you have 30 days to watch it. After you start watching it, you have 24 hours to finish it; the movie is automatically removed from you Mac after that period. During those 24 hours, you can watch the movie as many times as you like.

Like all videos sold at the Store, you can't burn movies in a form playable on a DVD player. You can, however, burn purchased movies as data for backup purposes.

2. Amazon Video On Demand

Amazon’s Video On Demand service is one of the few movie services other than the iTunes Store that’s not actively hostile to the Mac. It can afford to be magnanimous because it streams movies via a Web browser, even one that sits on your Mac. You can also watch the service’s movies on TiVo, Roku players, compatible Sony Bravia devices, Panasonic TVs that support Viera Cast, and compatible Samsung HDTVs.

You’re allowed to download videos to up to two compatible devices—a TiVo and Windows PC, for example. Regrettably a Mac isn’t one of those compatible devices. Clearly, Amazon Video On Demand is not the ideal service for Mac users, but it does offer a couple of advantages over the iTunes Store. For one, if you purchase a movie it's accessible to stream on any Internet-connected computer, so can watch it on your laptop while visiting the in-laws without having to remember to copy it to that Mac's hard drive. Another—particularly if you're willing to broaden your video diet to include TV shows—is price. Amazon, like the iTunes Store, sells individual TV episodes for $2 (SD) and $3 (HD). But purchase a season and you’ll save money at Amazon.

For example, the first season of Mad Men costs $20 (SD) and $35 at the iTunes Store. Amazon charges $18 (SD) and $28 (HD). Dexter Season 2 at the Store is $24 (SD) and $36 (HD). The same season costs $19 (SD) and $29 (HD) at Amazon. Even if you're interested in movies only, Amazon also offers deals on current movie rentals. For example, recently you could rent Orphan for $2. The Store’s rental price that day was $4.

One could very reasonably argue that the iTunes Store provides more value—you actually have the content on your hard drive rather than in the cloud, and you can play them on an iPod, iPhone, and Apple TV. But if your intention is to watch the video only on a TV connected to a computer or on the Mac's screen itself, Amazon could be the better deal, provided that you have fast and reliable broadband. (To stream HD content you should have a broadband connection of 5mbps or better.) Also, those Amazon videos are available to you wherever you have a computer and fast Internet connection.

3. Netflix

The-DVD-in-the-mailbox company, Netflix, has offered movie streaming for a couple of years through its Watch Instantly feature. If you have a Netflix plan starting at $9 (one DVD at a time) you're welcome to use this service, which offers more than 20,000 movies and TV episodes.

Not all that long ago, much of this content was Grade B material and/or ancient, but Netflix is making efforts to bring better content to the service. Recent release movies are starting to appear. And although you won’t see last night’s episodes of your favorite shows (or likely anything from the current season) Netflix does offer season packages of such popular shows as Heroes, Weeds, Californication, Lost, The Office, and Dexter. (Regrettably, no HBO content is offered for streaming.)

On a Mac you’d normally watch Netflix streams via a Web browser. However, both the Boxee and Plex media center applications allow you to watch Netflix Watch Instantly content. Or, if you’d like to use Apple’s media center application, Front Row, you can install the open-source Understudy, which adds both Netflix Watch Instantly and Hulu Desktop to Front Row.

The visual quality of Netflix's content doesn't match that of either the iTunes Store or Amazon Video On Demand—both of which look quite good. The faster your Internet connection, the better the picture. But even with a reasonably fast connection I’ve yet to see a stream that comes close to the look of a DVD (or iTunes or Amazon content), much less HD. But it’s hard to beat the price, particularly if you’re already a Netflix subscriber.

4. YouTube

Of course YouTube has movies… no, real movies. Okay, some are real old movies, but movies nonetheless. And they're free. If you’ve been wanting to catch up on your spaghetti westerns or B-movie drive-in fare (and a few gems thrown in for good measure), point your browser at YouTube’s Movies channel. And keep YouTube bookmarked. Reports are that YouTube is talking to major movie studios about offering movies for rent.

5. Boxee

As mentioned earlier, Boxee is a media center application rather than a source for videos. However, it includes a couple of plug-ins that can lead you to movies scattered across the Web. For example, install the Internet Archive plug-in and you can view a vast number of old films (including silent films) that are now in the public domain. The Public Torrents plug-in allows you to download this same kind of content and view it within Boxee. All content available through Boxee is free.

Speaking of Boxee, with the Apple TV 3.x update, the popular (and free) Apple TV hack that allowed you to run Boxee and XBMC, atvusb-creator, broke. Its creators are working to make it compatible, but in the meantime, the $50 aTV Flash hack does work with the Apple TV 3.0.1 update.)

6. Hulu

A popular destination for watching TV episodes and clips, Hulu also offers full-length movies. Similar to YouTube’s movies, the films available from Hulu aren’t recent blockbusters or Oscar-winning fare, but you’re sure to find a handful of movies to kill an evening. Like Hulu’s TV shows, these movies are free and include the occasional short advertisement.

You’re welcome to watch Hulu from within a Web browser, but Hulu Desktop, Boxee, or Plex provide the better viewing experience. Of the three avenues, Hulu Desktop is the most reliable because, unlike with Boxee and Plex, the people running Hulu actually want it to work. Hulu has taken pains in the past to break other applications’ access to the service.

Best free antivirus software

Though Sophos does offer a good free version of its software, Avast Free Mac Security edges it out as the best free antivirus software for macOS. In security lab tests, Avast detected 99.9 percent of macOS malware, and 100 percent of Windows malware. However, if you want more advanced protection (like ransomware detection), you’ll need to upgrade to paid software.

What to look for in antivirus software

By our reckoning, antivirus software should be able to neutralize a threat before it can begin wreaking havoc. That means preventing the download, installation, or execution of malicious software.

Since you can encounter threats by visiting compromised or malicious websites, receiving virus-laden attachments, or accessing USB drives with malware, good AV software should scan on a continuous basis unless you configure it otherwise. And ideally, files identified as malicious should be quarantined into a special storage area managed by the AV software, with the option to automatically delete files known to be malware or repair normal documents that also carry devious payloads.

Great AV suites also will monitor the filesystem for certain kinds of changes. Ransomware—which is malware that will rapidly encrypt user files like documents and mailboxes and then delete the originals—has become a huge moneymaker on other platforms. As a prime opportunity for attackers, it’s the greatest danger Mac users likely face as a category.

Detecting this pattern and halting it before any files are unavailable should be possible without an anti-malware system knowing the specific innards of a ransomware virus. Sophos, our top pick, includes this feature in the Home Premium version of its 2018 update. Other vendors, like Avast and Trend Micro Antivirus, offer an alternative feature that allows you to whitelist programs allowed to manipulate files in specific directories. So if this particular type of attack becomes rapidly popular, you’ll be protected.

Good antivirus software should also use minimal computational resources. That’s especially the case these days—AV monitoring hasn’t become much more complicated than when it first became available, and faster, multi-core CPUs can easily handle the demands of running AV software in the background without disturbing your active work.

Beyond these primary features, an easy-to-navigate interface and extra features are worth factoring into your decision. Some AV software are full-fledged suites that offer additional options like backup service for essential files, a password manager, parental controls, anti-tracking and privacy modes or options, a more advanced firewall, and the blocking of Potentially Unwanted Applications (PUAs).

How we test

Each software package is evaluated creating a clean installation of macOS Mojave, cloning it for each AV product, and then booting separately into each one to install a different package. This was to ensure that previous app installations didn’t interfere with new ones—sometimes AV software treats other AV software as an infection.

In addition to visiting malicious websites, downloading known malicious software, and even running said malware, we also reference the most recent reports from two labs that regularly cover macOS malware: AV Comparatives and AV-TEST. These laboratories test AV software against sets of known malware as well as products that are grouped as potentially unwanted applications (like adware).

The latter doesn’t damage or expose your computer or its files but may consume power and CPU cycles. Because the testing effectively looks at a combination of virus databases and behavior, they remain good gauges even after many months. When an antivirus software package lacks a rating from a known security research lab, we do more extensive testing with real malware.

Finally, while we gave props for a lot of different features and behaviors, we marked products down if they lacked any or all of the following:

• A nearly perfect score on macOS malware detection
• Ransomware monitoring
• Native browser plug-in or system-level Web proxy

Privacy concerns

Using an anti-virus product, especially any that includes tools to also improve your online privacy, may lull you into believing you’re safe from personal and private information leaking out. That’s not quite the case. While there’s no reason to panic, you should consider a few reasonable issues.

First, an antivirus product may upload the complete text of files flagged to the cloud, where it can be analyzed by separate tools hosted there. This practice is normal and sensible: Some malware can detect when a running process may examine it, and will then engage in subterfuge. Antivirus software makers also can access their massive databases to examine files with characteristics that trigger their algorithms—certain elements that match known malware. As a result, security researchers discover new viruses, worms, Trojans horses, and the like.

However, helping the greater good means you’ll have to be comfortable with trusting a third-party with your file contents. Where appropriate, we noted privacy policy issues in individual reviews.

Antivirus For Macs

Second, this software may also rely partly or entirely on cloud-based checks of URLs, malware, and the like. 1. The controller works both wirelessly via Bluetooth or wired with a Micro-USB cable (not included). This sleek controller is rechargeable and has an 8-hour battery life. Also, its built-in trackpad can be used to control your computer's mouse.
2. I've used n64 controllers that were direct to usb wires. They are trash. Analog stick is practically binary. Imo best bet is to use a regular n64 controller and a mayflash adapter.

Considering the awkwardness of almost every other aspect of Mac gaming, I was a little shocked to discover how easy it is to pair popular console controllers with my MacBook. Sure, you’ll need to tweak a few things. Yes, some of the “support” exists only through the generosity and dedication of a few modders. Even so, you’re not entirely nuts if you assume you can pick up your PlayStation or Xbox controller and use it with your MacBook without dropping any extra cash.

There’s a catch, of course (and there always is): It’s easier to pull this off with some controllers over others. You’ll sometimes need to download separate drivers, and you might need to reboot the system to see those drivers take effect. You’ll almost certainly have a better time if you use a wired gamepad. For that matter, there’s no guarantee that every controller here will work with every game (although you’ll have a better chance if you play games downloaded through Steam).

Luckily for us, it is possible. You just might have to do a little work, so that’s why I’ve listed each controller here according to ease of use and setup, with the easiest being at the top.

Sony DualShock 4 for PlayStation 4

You’re in luck if you own a PlayStation 4. Sony may be the company that infamously resisted crossplay with other console systems to the point of absurdity, but it’s also the only major console maker that made an official adapter that’s partly aimed at Mac users. Just buy the $60 DualShock 4 USB Wireless Adapter, plug it into your Mac, and your DualShock 4 controller should work immediately. Power to the players, indeed.

But if you don’t feel like paying $60 for what’ll likely amount to a dongle for another dongle, you can plug the controller directly into your Mac with a Micro USB cable. It should work immediately. If you’re having trouble, you can see if your Mac is properly recognizing the device by opening About This Mac, clicking System Report, then USB, and seeing if Wireless Controller is listed (yes, even if you have it plugged in).

Alternatively, you can simply pair it through Bluetooth. First, open the Bluetooth menu under your Mac's System Preferences. Then reset the DualShock 4 by slipping a paperclip into the tiny hole near the DualShock’s L2 button (on the back). Hold it down for a couple of seconds.

After that, activate the DualShock 4’s Discovery Mode by holding the Share and PlayStation button at once for a few seconds. The controller should appear in the Bluetooth menu, and hopefully you’ll soon be shocked by how well it works.

Xbox 360 controller

Plenty of folks still claim the aging wired Xbox 360 controller is still the best gamepad for the PC, and as far as I’m concerned, that remains true for the Mac as well. Alas, it’s not through any effort on the part of Microsoft itself. You can’t even pair a wireless version through Bluetooth thanks to Microsoft’s proprietary software, so you’ll need to keep it plugged in with the cable regardless of which model you use.

Fortunately, courtesy of the modder FranticRain, you can get it to work simply by downloading a driver from Github. It works perfectly (so long as you’re not using it wirelessly). Just download the .dmg file, run it, and let it install. You’ll then have to restart your Mac, but after it boots up you should see Xbox 360 Controllers on the bottom row of your System Preferences.

Even better, FranticRain keeps it up to date. As of the time of writing, the file was updated just two days ago. You’ll simply need to be running macOS 10.11 (El Capitan) or later for it to work.

Xbox One controller

Best Usb Controller For Mac

The mod from FranticRain I mentioned above also works with the Xbox One controller, but not as smoothly. You’ll still need to have it connected to the Mac through a Micro USB cable, but you’ll likely also need to head to System Preferences, click on Xbox 360 Controllers at the bottom (assuming you’ve installed the mod), and then click Advanced.

At the bottom, you’ll see an option to Pretend to be an Xbox 360 controller. Check it. You shouldn’t have any other troubles beyond that. Plenty of other users claim it works fine without this option for multiple games, but it only worked if I checked this option on my MacBook, my MacBook Pro, and my iMac.

As a reminder, if you’re installing FranticRain’s mod for the first time, you’ll need to restart your Mac before it takes effect.

Steam Controller

Okay, so it’s not a console controller per se, but the Steam Controllerwas designed for use with Steam’s Big Picture mode, which delivers a home console-like experience for Steam’s staggering library of PC and Mac games. But more importantly for our purposes, it fully works with Steam on the Mac out of the box. Just plug in the USB adapter (with a dongle, naturally) and it should work immediately.

Sure, this sounds great, but I’m going to be frank: I can’t stand the Steam Controller. It’s comfortable to hold and looks sort of cool, but Valve designed it with indented circular touchpads rather than two traditional thumbsticks and a D-pad. A couple of years later, I still haven’t made it over the learning curve. I wouldn’t suggest buying it solely for its ease of setup, but it’s a worthy option if you’ve already bought one for your PC.

Nintendo Pro Wireless Controller

At $70, the Nintendo Pro Wireless Controller packs a pro price tag, but if you’ve already bought one for Nintendo’s wildly popular Switch console, you can also bring it along for good times on the Mac.

Connected through a USB-C cable, it’s ridiculously easy to set up—at least if you’re playing your games through the Steam beta client. Here, you’ll find support for the Pro Wireless Controller under Preferences > Controller, where you’ll select Use Nintendo button layout so you don’t have to deal with the confusion of a Nintendo controller acting like one for the Xbox.

Best Game Controller For Mac

And yes, if you were wondering, you can use the Switch’s regular Joy-Con controllers with your Mac if you pair them through the Bluetooth interface in System Preferences. The problem is that the Mac will register them as two separate controllers—which, of course, they technically are. As I see it, it's not worth the effort.

DualShock 3 for PlayStation 3

The DualShock 4 is your best bet for playing Mac games with a PlayStation controller, but you’ll be fine if you only have its predecessor. You just won’t have support from Sony’s official adapter and you’ll likely need to play it wirelessly.

The pairing process for the DualShock 3 is a little complex (and not guaranteed to work, judging from reports from other users), which is why I’ve listed it last.

First, reset the controller by slipping a paper clip in the tiny hole on in the controller’s backside near the L2 button. Hold it down for a few seconds. This unpairs it from any other device.

After that, plug the DualShock 3 into to the Mac with the Micro USB charging cable. Press the PlayStation button and then the four lights on the top of the controller should light up. When you see the lights, disconnect the cable.

You should soon see a pairing request from your system for PlayStation3 Controller. If it asks for an access code, enter 0000.

This should work. Even so, numerous people claim it doesn’t always work with older versions of macOS, and other people claim they never see the code request. However, it can be tricky to break out of your comfort zone. The browser you're currently using might not be the best even on the best laptop, but you've probably become use to its idiosyncrasies over the years without realizing there are better options around that will make your life so much easier.

Here, we’ve put the biggest browsers through their paces (plus some that you may not be familiar with) to identify the browser that best ticks all of these boxes. And, if you have a particular concern, then read on to see if there’s an alternative that might be better suited to your needs.

1. Mozilla Firefox

Firefox is back after a total overhaul, and has retaken its crown

Light on system resources

Firefox recently received its biggest update in 13 years, and it's so impressive, it's propelled the browser to the top of our list.

Firefox has always been known for its flexibility and support for extensions, but in recent years it had started to lag behind the competition in terms of speed. Firefox Quantum, first released last year, represented a total overhaul of the browser's code base, with speeds now comparable with Google Chrome. That's not just on top-end computers, either – the new Firefox makes frugal use of RAM, even with masses of tabs open.

Firefox also scores serious points when it comes to privacy. Mozilla is non-profit, which means it doesn't have the same impetus to sell your data as some other browser developers. The organization also makes regular updates to help protect its users' privacy as internet companies come under increasing scrutiny over the way they treat people's data. Recent additions include support for password-free logins and automatic blocking of ad trackers.

There's even a new version of Firefox designed specifically for browsing the web in virtual reality, and Mozilla releases beta versions of new features frequently through its Test Pilot program.

It's not always the absolute fastest – for some pages Chrome still has the edge, as Mozilla's own video demonstrates – but the new Firefox has come out swinging and is our pick for the best web browser of 2018 so far.

2. Google Chrome

If your system has the resources, Chrome is 2018's best browser

Infinitely expandable

With Chrome, Google has built an extendable, efficient browser that deserves its place at the top of the browser rankings. According to w3schools' browser trend analysis its user base is only rising, even as Microsoft Edge's install numbers are presumably growing. Why? Well, it's cross-platform, incredibly stable, brilliantly presented to take up the minimum of screen space, and just about the nicest browser there is to use.

Its wide range of easily-obtained and installed extensions mean you can really make it your own, and there's support for parental controls and a huge range of tweaks and settings to ensure maximum efficiency.

However, Chrome isn’t without its downsides. It’s one of the heaviest browsers in terms of resource use, so it’s not brilliant on machines with limited RAM, and its performance doesn’t quite match up to others as far as benchmarking is concerned. And, with Google’s tentacles running through it, you may be uncomfortable with how your browsing data is used.

That said, Google is making some moves towards security, and is pushing HTTPS particularly hard. Future versions of the browser will make it very clear when sites aren't using HTTPS encryption, aiming to make it standard throughout the web.

Like Firefox, Chrome now also supports password-free logins via WebAuthn – either to replace traditional passwords completely, or work as a form of two-factor authentication. The browser also offers more features for web app developers, including more consistent experiences across different VR headsets, and the ability to use input from sensors (such as your device's ambient light sensor and accelerometer).

3. Opera

An underrated browser that's a great choice for slow connections

Integrated ad-blocker

It's sad that Opera makes up only around 1% of the browser market, because it really is a quality browser. It launches fast, the UI is brilliantly clean, and it does everything its rivals can do with a couple of extras thrown in for good measure.

The key reason we'd at least recommend having Opera installed alongside your main browser is its Opera Turbo feature. This compresses your web traffic, routing it through Opera's servers, which makes a huge difference to browsing speed if you're stuck on rural dial-up or your broadband connection is having a moment.

It reduces the amount of data transferred too, handy if you're using a mobile connection, and this re-routing also dodges any content restrictions your ISP might place on your browsing, which can be mighty handy. Opera automatically ducks out of the way if you're using secure sites like banks so your traffic is free and clear of any potential privacy violation.

There's also an integrated ad-blocker – which can be switched off if you're morally inclined in that direction – and a battery-saving mode which promises to keep your laptop going for longer.

4. Microsoft Edge

Microsoft's new browser offers full integration with Windows 10

Built-in reading mode

The default 'browsing experience' on Windows 10, and unavailable for older operating systems, Edge is an odd one. Quite why Microsoft needs to be running a pair of browser products in tandem rather than making Edge backwards compatible is beyond us. The company's reason, it seems, is that Edge represents the more user-friendly end of Redmond's offering while Internet Explorer scales a little better for enterprise.

Integration with Windows 10's core gimmicks seems to be Edge's main strong point. It happily runs as a modern-skinned app on Windows 10's tablet mode, and works with Cortana. It's also highly streamlined for the current web age, doing away with insecure protocols like ActiveX and forcing you into Internet Explorer if you want to use them. We're more used to browsers failing to render newer pages than we are to being told off for visiting older corners of the web.

Curmudgeonly grumbles aside, actually using Edge is a perfectly pleasant experience. It's super-quick, hammers through benchmarks, its integrated reading mode makes complex sites more palatable, and by sandboxing it away from the rest of the operating system Microsoft has ensured that Edge won't suffer the security breaches of its older brother.

It's just a shame that Microsoft is quite so insistent on forcing Edge upon Windows 10 users, making it the default browser for links opened in the Mail app, adding shortcuts to your desktop after major OS updates, and presenting it as a potential result if you start typing 'Firefox' in the Cortana search box.

5. Microsoft Internet Explorer

Fast and efficient, but less expandable than Firefox and Chrome

Clean design

Microsoft Internet Explorer has seen some ups and downs in its long tenure, from dominating the browser charts to languishing behind its main two competitors. This is partly an issue of choice – particularly the browser choice that Microsoft was forced to give customers after a court ruling – and partially because older versions fell behind the rendering and compatibility curve.

There are no such issues with Internet Explorer 11. It's clean, powerful, highly compatible, and it demands less of your RAM and CPU than equivalent pages would on Chrome or Firefox. Plus it one-ups both of them on WebKit's Sunspider benchmark.

That's not to say this browser is perfect. Google's V8 benchmark sees it struggling, and IE isn't quite as able to handle add-ons and extensions as many of its competitors. So while there's no reason to avoid IE like there might once have been, if you're looking for a more customised browsing experience you're out of luck.

6. Vivaldi

Build your own browser with unique docking and tab-stacking

Incredibly customizable

Not the fastest

Here's something a bit different. We all spend probably far too much time sitting in front of our web browsers, and up-and-comer Vivaldi wants to make that as pleasant and personal an experience as possible.

The whole style and structure of its interface is entirely up to you. There's a built-in note-taking system, you can dock websites as side panels while using the main window to do your main browsing, and we love its innovative tab stacking tech, which allows you to group up tabs and move them around to avoid the crowding that so often plagues other browsers.

Vivaldi is built on Chromium, which means you can expand it even further with extensions from the Chrome Web Store. Just pick your preferred plugin and click 'Add to Chrome'. Some extensions might behave slightly differently in Vivaldi, but most work perfectly.

Vivaldi is a refreshing and creative take on web browsing, and one to watch in the next couple of years as more features are added.

7. Tor Browser

More than just a browser – a whole suite of online security tools

Tor Browser is, perhaps unjustly, most regularly associated with the seedy underworld of the dark web. While it's true that you can use this web browser to access otherwise unlisted sites, Tor's privacy aspects – where your traffic is routed through random nodes the world over, making it very hard to track - are its real asset.

Tor Browser is really a package of tools; Tor itself, a heavily modified version of the Firefox Extended Support release, and a number of other privacy packages that combine to make it the most secure browsing experience you're likely to find. Nothing is tracked, nothing is stored, and you can forget about bookmarks and cookies.

You'll need to alter your browsing habits to ensure that you don't perform actions online that reveal your identity – Tor Browser is just a tool, after all – but for a secondary browser useful for those private moments it's a great choice. Run it from a USB stick and nobody need even know you have it at all.

Mac's don't need defragging as OS X automatically writes 2Gb or below sized files to one contiguous space on the drive. There are certain cases where's it's needed to free up a large spaces on the drive, but not something everyone has to do.

Far as other Mac maintainence, there really isn't any except to backup one's files regularly. Keeping Software Updated and run a web browser check to make sure the plug-ins are current.

For Safari and Flash, this check is more accurate
